Dear Mrs. Winterton,
Support for the Sudan Peace Process
I am delighted to report that the Sudan Peace Process has made tremendous progress and a final peace deal is within sight. The warring parties have agreed to share power for 6 years and then hold a referendum on secession for the South of Sudan. The negotiations are still continuing over which parts of Sudan are in the South and in particular whether the Nuba Mountains region will be included in the secession referendum. It is clear that there is still great mistrust between the parties and an independent peacekeeping and monitoring force will be required.
Please will you let me know:
1. what support the British government is giving to the negotiations to ensure that the remaining issues are resolved peacefully and an agreement is signed;
2. what support the British government is prepared to give Sudan during the 6 year period when the peace deal is being implemented.
I would like to see British troops forming a significant part of any UN monitoring force in Sudan during the 6 year interim period. I would also like to see significant funding provided for reconstruction in the South of Sudan.
The warring parties in Sudan are trying to bring peace to their country. They deserve our support. Please give them your support.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
